You don’t take up much space
on this planet we’re all on,
but there’s more to you than meets the eye
so much of which I’m fond.
They told me that it always rained,
that the skies would be gloomy and grey,
but when compared to Auckland
London has fewer rainy days.
Your public transport is actually great
if only you really knew,
but please make quiet carriages clearer
for the inexperienced few.
Your many and varied accents
really blew my mind,
But your enthusiasm for how I say “deck”
came as a surprise.
I haven’t been to every continent
there’s a couple still to go,
but one thing I am certain of
is that your pubs are the best I’ll ever know.
I love your sense of humour,
your character and your wit,
but I also love your wisdom:
“a cup of tea will solve it”.
Your proximity to the rest of Europe
is another string to your bow,
but I know for now it’s a touchy subject
so I’ll move on with this ode.
You are my second home
and I hope that that’s okay,
you broadened my horizons
and played a part in who I am today.
I’ll be forever grateful
for the people that I met,
some have also moved away
though most remain there yet.
So I’m glad you’re just a flight away
I know you’re always there,
with any luck it won’t be long
before the borders open here.
“Football’s a difficult business and aren’t they prima donnas. But it’s a wonderful game.”
– Queen Elizabeth II
That’s all for now,
